Mill Road
A Development Brief for Mill Road was adopted in January 2005. It was produced to guide the regeneration of the area between the future route of the Barnstaple Western Bypass north of the River Taw onto Braunton Road and the River Yeo adjacent to the town centre.
Any development proposals for the site will have to include the following:
- New housing
- Central piazza/open space
- Marina
- Sea Scout Headquarters
- Barnstaple Rugby Club
- Bus routes
- Cycle/footpath links
- Feature/gateway structure
Quality of the design of any redevelopment at Mill Road will be critical. The riverside location will demand a high quality design and strong architecture. It is also important to maintain the existing character of the area. There are a number of businesses in the Mill Road area that are important to Barnstaple’s service economy and these should be retained. Priority will be given to the renovation of existing properties rather than new build.
