The Story So Far...

The Square/Strand

The completion of the Barnstaple Western Bypass will reduce the amount of traffic flowing through the heart of the town, freeing up acres of space for the public to enjoy on the Square and the Strand.

In March 2005, the Council approved a joint scheme between North Devon District Council and Devon County Council to:

  • Provide one-way traffic along the Strand away from the Square freeing up space to provide wider footpaths and improved cycle links
  • Provide a new area of public open space in front of the Museum on the Square
  • Improve the pedestrian crossings around the Square
  • Encourage more walking, cycling and use of buses to keep traffic levels at a reduced level and improve the environment in the town

Currently over 30,000 vehicles pass through the Strand and the Square every day. It’s hoped the new bridge will reduce this traffic considerably, allowing all of these measures to be introduced.

The estimated cost of the scheme will be £1.75m; £1.62m will be shared equally between the County and District Councils, with the additional £130,000 for public space works to be funded by North Devon District Council.

Work on the Square started in January and is due to complete in time for the opening of the new bridge in May 2007.

Work on the Strand will follow later.
