POLICE WILL GET TOUGH ON DRIVERS WHO IGNORE SIGNS
Drivers are flagrantly abusing new traffic laws affecting The Square in Barnstaple. The road rules, brought in following the opening of the Downstream Bridge, are also affecting residents living in nearby Trinity Street.
Police will now be taking direct action in an effort to stop people driving through No Entry signs into The Square from Taw Vale.
Since the opening of the Downstream Bridge only buses and taxis are allowed access to the Square from Taw Vale.
But many motorists are ignoring the road signs and using the junction.
Police road casualty reduction officer Jon Benson said: "The bridge opened on May 23, and people have had four weeks to get used to the new system.
"It really is quite a problem now, mainly at commuter times.
"We will now start enforcing it due to the contempt people are showing for the rules."
In the short time the Journal's photographer was on the scene he witnessed one car every 10 to 15 seconds driving through the No Entry signs - in front of the police.
Mr Benson said an added problem was occurring in nearby Trinty Street which drivers have been using as a rat run.
He said: "Some people are turning right at The Square into Litchdon Street and going through into Trinity Street.
"People are living in Trinity Street, there is traffic parked and it is very narrow."
He said residents had complained of an increase in traffic using the road as a rat run since the opening of the new bridge.
Mr Benson said: "There are two issues here. One is a legal one and the other is about a community and the well being of the people who live there.
"The message needs to get through to the people who are doing this through sheer bone idleness, ignorance or contempt for others."
