Try the famous local produce
Grab a taste of Devon! You won’t be disappointed...
Devon is famed for its delicious local produce. And it’s about much more than seasonally grown fruit and veg – although that’s super tasty too. You can find everything from fish, meat eggs and cheese to cakes, pastries and, of course, the hallowed Devon pasty. (Don’t listen to what they say in Cornwall – ours is the best.)
Where can you get your hands on this goodness?
One of the best places to grab your share of the local produce is Barnstaple’s historic Pannier Market, which has been voted as one of Britain’s top ten food markets. Visit and you can buy take your pick of the very best local produce before buying it directly from the people who made it. Food experiences don’t get fresher, or more authentic, than that!
Then there’s Butchers Row, built at the same time as the market building in 1855. To this day you can pick up high quality local meats to take home and rustle up something special. From field to fork with as little travelling as possible. That’s what it’s all about! Butchers Row is also home to fishmongers where you can select your favourite seafood, freshly caught of course, as well as fantastic bakeries – some say the town’s best. Delicious.
We haven’t even started on the hearty local ales and ciders. But let’s leave those for now. It’s food for thought and you’ve had plenty to digest.
