Introduction to historic buildings and conservation
The importance of heritage (with view to housing shortage, sustainability, retrofit?)
The challenges around maintaining historic buildings – some common issues (i.e. water ingress, brick and stone pointing – cement versus lime, deterioration over time)
Basic geology – the building stones of Britain
Masonry applications – building stone, weathering’s, ornament and carvings, memorials, paving etc.
Basic lime – lime cycle, binders, aggregates, uses, lime v cement etc.

Approach to Maintenance and repair
Stone Repairs
Indent and mortar repairs application
Practical activities: Fixing and repairs; letter cutting in stone, set up stone blocks on bankers, carve chamfers, try different chisels.
