There's a packed programme of events planned in Barnstaple in the run up to Christmas, kicking off with the town's light switch-on event on Sunday 19 November. Back with a new format and more lights, this year’s Christmas Light Switch On event promises to be better than ever.

A street food party in the Pannier Market will kick off a day of family fun and celebration at 11am with various entertainment throughout the day, including a world record attempt! Local dance schools are taking part in the annual Children in Need Tapathon world record attempt at 1pm; come along and cheer them on.

At 4pm there will be a move to The Square where there will be usual magical, festive mix of entertainment and music on the stage until the countdown to the big light switch on at 6pm. In between you can enjoy a family fun fair on the Strand, visit Santa in his grotto at Green Lanes, or make a start on your Christmas shopping.

Before the main lights are illuminated, there will be a chance to support the North Devon Hospice and Children’s Hospice South West’s Light up a Life campaign as a special star is lit up to mark the launch of the appeal.
There will then be a sneak preview of what to expect from Beauty and the Beast, Barnstaple’s most spectacular pantomime, ever as two of the stars - Bobby Crush from ITV’s Benidorm and Opportunity Knocks fame (Dame Ethel Eiffel) and chart-topper and Eurovision favourite, Nicki French (The Witch) - take to the stage with special performances.

After their performances Bobby and Nicki will then be joined by Lisa Wallis from local charity ChemoHero to ‘press the button’ illuminating Barnstaple for the festive period. One of the main sponsors of the event, Stagecoach, nominated Lisa for the honour of turning on the lights in recognition of the work they do and will be launching a special ‘ChemoHero’ bus at the event. The bus features a special ChemoHero livery whilst inside you can learn more about the ChemoHero story and how to get involved. Look out for it out and about across North Devon.

The full line up for the Square is as follows:
4.00 Children’s choir (featuring Yazzy)
4.45 Reuben Jones (featuring Small Town Jones)
5.15 Launch of Light up a Life Campaign (ND Hospice and CHSW)
5.30 Pantomime stars featuring performances from Bobby Crush (Dame Ethel Eiffel) and Nick French (The Witch).
6.00 Switch - on

Hopps and Chapple from local radio station, The Voice, will keep the party going and will be joined by Seth Conway who will oversee the switching on of the lights.

The full programme of Christmas activities boasts more events than ever before and features a selection of new activities along with some firm favourite - look out for Barnstaple Town Centre Management’s dedicated Christmas guide which will be delivered through your door shortly.
