‘LIGHTS OUT’ to commemorate outbreak of WW1.
People in North Devon are invited to join a special ceremony to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One.
As part of the national LIGHTS OUT event, North Devon Council is organising a walk from the war memorial in Rock Park to the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon when a single candle will be lit in an upstairs window.
Everyone in the UK is invited to take part in LIGHTS OUT by turning off their lights from 10pm to 11pm on 4 August, leaving on a single light or candle for a shared moment of reflection. People can take part in whatever way they, choose marking the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War either individually or by attending one of the many events being organised around the country for a collective experience.
LIGHTS OUT is the headline project of 14-18 NOW, the official cultural programme for the First World War Centenary Commemorations.
The inspiration for LIGHTS OUT comes from a famous remark made on the eve of the outbreak of war by the then Foreign Secretary, Sir Edward Grey: “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our life-time”. Britain declared war on Germany at 11pm on 4 August 1914 ushering in one of the darkest periods in our history.
Council Chairman Cllr Malcolm Wilkinson says: “This is a very special event and one that I’m proud to take part in. It’s so important to remember the sacrifices made by so many people in North Devon and across the country and I’d encourage people to come along and share this moment of reflection.”
Council Leader Cllr Brian Greenslade says: “We can’t let a significant milestone like this pass us by without showing our respects to those who fought for our freedom 100 years ago. This event will provide the perfect setting for us all to stop and think about what this moment means to us all.
“It is particularly poignant for me as my grandfather fought in Belgium and France in World War One.”
People are invited to join the council at the memorial for the walk on 4 August at 9.30pm or come along at 10pm for the lighting of the candle at the museum.
