Joining a team

There are dozens of sports clubs and teams based in Barnstaple, especially when it comes to football and rugby. Many of them take part in competitive leagues and are always looking for new team members if you’d like to get involved. Barnstaple is also a fantastic place to brush up on your tennis skills, with plenty of coaching available.

Staying in shape

Fitness fanatic? There are plenty of gyms in and around the town centre and a wide selection of fitness classes, from boxercise to zumba. Take your pick, limber up and get to it!

Something more leisurely?

Getting active doesn’t always have to be about pushing yourself to the max. Sometimes it’s nice just to enjoy a simple stroll or a round of golf. Barnstaple is great for both. One of the best places for a walk is along the Tarka Trail, a beautiful footpath that hugs the edge of the River Taw. Or head for Portmore and see if your golf swing is still in shape. There’s an 18 hole course, a 23 bay driving range, practice putting and chipping greens and all the equipment you need is available to hire. Fore!

Being the spectator

Barnstaple Rugby Club and Barnstaple Town FC are enthusiastically supported by loyal locals and both clubs have fully covered stands where you can sit and enjoy the games. Barnstaple is also home to the Tarka Tennis Centre. Each year it hosts the Tarka Open, which is part of the IFT Pro Circuit and sees some of the best female tennis players in Britain battling it out for the $75,000 prize money.
