Streets Ahead

We have an ambitious and wide-ranging vision for Barnstaple which will form a town of exceptional quality.

Based on extensive consultation with local people, our business community and partner organisations, the Barnstaple Vision action plan includes a whole range of exciting projects, ranging from Barnstaple in Bloom to the regeneration of Seven Brethren, which we plan to support or implement over the coming years.

Market Quarter is the first of the big projects to receive funding and is an exciting regeneration project in the heart of Barnstaple!

The project is made up of four schemes that together will open up our town centre, breathe new life into some of our unique, historic buildings and develop a cultural hub that brings new activity into the town. It will transform Barnstaple into a place where residents have access to good quality retail, leisure and open spaces, local businesses thrive in fit for purpose buildings and visitors will want to visit and spend in the local economy.

The schemes have been made possible thanks to funding of £6.5m from the Government’s Future High Streets Fund (FHSF) programme, with £4.4m match funding from North Devon Council. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to develop and regenerate Barnstaple, to improve the quality of the environment, ensure future resilience and facilitate transformational change.

Barnstaple Place Partnership Board

The role of the Barnstaple Place Partnership Board (BPPB) is to develop and deliver the successful place management of Barnstaple to ensure it is a thriving place for all to live, work, visit and play.

Place Management is a ‘co-ordinated, area-based, multi-stakeholder approach to improve locations, harnessing the skills, experiences and resources of those in the public, private and voluntary sectors’.

The Partnership will bring together place leaders across council, business, voluntary and community sectors to:

  • Take ownership of the vision for the town and identify the key tasks to support its delivery
  • Based on this vision develop and monitor a place making action plan for the town, identifying who will action the areas for improvement
  • Oversee, monitor and support key town centre regeneration projects
  • Identify key areas for investment required to support the vitality and viability of the town
  • Identify and implement community-led initiatives / projects to effectively address challenges faced in and by our community and improve wellbeing
  • Report on its activities to all stakeholders
