Queen Street car park

This project involves the delineation and upgrade of an access into the Queen Street car park from the main arterial route and the redesigned layout of the car park to improve legibility to the town.

The project has been split into three phases both to ensure a part of the car park remains open at all times and to accommodate the construction compound for the 36/37 Boutport Street works.

Work to phase one (part of Queen Street car park) started on 7 May 2024. It is due for completion in autumn 2024 and has included significant drainage works, the provision of rain gardens for trees and resurfacing works (to include areas of complete reconstruction).

Once these works are complete, Queen Street car park will re-open (this releases 130 car parking spaces). On completion of phase one, works to phase two will commence, which includes Bear Street car park and the new entrance to Alexandra Road.

Phase two will include all planting of trees and the laying of the coloured asphalt, together with the erection of permanent signage. It is currently anticipated that these works will be carried out between October 2024 and February 2025.

Phase three (the contractors compound) will then commence when the Boutport Street works are completed. We currently anticipate these works being carried out between November 2025 and January 2026. The contractors will return to site to complete these works.

Works to the car park include:

– a new vehicular access provided off Alexandra Road
– improved layout and surface to provide one large car park with new lighting and landscaping
– improved pedestrian walkways to Boutport Street, Queens Walk and Bear Street
Market Quarter
